Laura's Houses
In October 2015, The Brain Foundation of Fairfax, VA acquired its ninth, and last house in Fairfax County, VA . Each house is designated "Laura’s House," in honor of Laura Harsh, the daughter of the founder of The Brain Foundation, Trudy Harsh. Thirty-six residents, who may have not otherwise had an opportunity for independent living, pay minimal rent for a room to call their own. The houses are located within walking distance of public transportation as well as everyday necessities such as grocery stores. Furnishings and decorations are provided almost exclusively through donations.
For some of our residents, Laura's House offers the first chance at independent living that they have ever had. As a place they can be themselves, each of our houses strives to be more than a residence; it is home. Camaraderie with fellow housemates in many cases becomes that of a family. Each resident has his or her own psychiatrist and counselor to ensure quality of living and continual growth. Most of our residents have jobs and support themselves.
In addition to being a wonderful opportunity for our residents, our houses also help to ease the pressure on family members dealing with the economic and emotional realities of brain disease. Most importantly, we offer hope for the future.
Our impact extends beyond Northern Virginia. In Florida, Dave's House follows our model to offer individuals with brain disease a place to live independently. We hope that one day our model will exist in localities throughout the United States.
